Multiwavelength Observations of a Flare from Markarian 501
We present multiwavelength observations of the BL Lacertae object Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) in 1997 between April 8 and April 19. Evidence of correlated variability is seen in very high energy (VHE; E * 350 GeV) gray observations taken with the Whipple Observatory g-ray telescope, data from the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, and quick-look res...

Context. Active Galactic Nuclei are highly variable emitters of electromagnetic waves from the radio to the gamma-ray regime. This variability may be periodic, which in turn could be the signature of a binary black hole. Systems of black holes are strong emitters of gravitational waves whose amplitude depends on the binary orbital parameters as the component mass, the orbital semi-major-axis an...
متن کاملA Rapid X-ray Flare from Markarian 501.
We present X-ray observations of the BL Lacertae object Mrk 501 that were taken with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer in 1998 May as part of a multiwavelength campaign. The X-ray light curve shows a very rapid flare in which the 2-10 keV flux increased by approximately 60% in less than 200 s. This rapid rise is followed by a drop-off in the 2-10 keV flux of approximately 40% in less than 600 s. ...
متن کاملMultiwavelength observations of a TeV-Flare from W Com
We report results from an intensive campaign of multiwavelength observations of the intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object W Com (z=0.102) during a strong outburst of very high energy (VHE; E > 180 GeV) gamma-ray emission in June 2008. The initial detection of this VHE flare by VERITAS, an array of four 12-m diameter imaging atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes, was followed by observatio...
متن کاملX-ray flares from Markarian 501
Motivated by the recent discovery of a hierarchical X-ray flaring phenomenon in Mrk 421, we conducted a systematic search for X-ray flares from Mrk 501, another well-known TeV blazar, by making use of the rich RXTE archival database. We detected flares over a wide range of timescales, from months down to minutes, as in the case of Mrk 421. However, the flares do not seem to occur nearly as freq...
